The Mobile County Public Schools welcomes your interest in teaching with us.  Due to a nation-wide shortage of MATH and SCIENCE teachers the U. S. Department of Education and the Alabama Department of Education have created alternative methods to gain teacher certification.  If you have a B.S. degree in math, science (such as a B.S. in Biology or Chemistry), or engineering, please view the testimonials of others like you who have non-education backgrounds and have made the transition to teaching math and science in the Mobile County Public Schools.

Alternative Baccalaureate Summary
This approach provided by the Alabama State Department of Education in Montgomery allows a local board of education to employ, as teachers, individuals who have earned at least a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited senior institution. The applicant must have a 2.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale. and pass two required tests. One is the appropriate state required subject matter Praxis II and the Alabama Basic Skills Exam (the APTTP).  Then after hiring applicants are required to take and pass with a "C" or higher four designated college courses in Education.  Be sure to check the other pages on this site for more information. 

Certification Alternative for Math and Science Teachers

Teachers hired in the Transition to Teaching program utilize the Alabama State Department of Education (SDE) Alternative Baccalaureate Route (ABC) to Certification. After teaching for three consecutive years in the Mobile County Public Schools, completing the coursework, and passing the two state-required examinations, ABC teachers become fully certified teachers in the State of Alabama.

How Do I Apply?
Apply to be a teacher in the Mobile County Public Schools by completing the statewide application.  Go to www.alsde.edu/TeachInAlabama to complete an application online.  You must also complete a packet of information including references and statements from your doctor. This application packet can be found by going back one page, look for HR Forms on the left and click. Then click to download the Certified Applicant Package on the top.  Download/print out this packet of forms and information and follow the instructions.

An applicant MUST be recommended by a principal to be hired as a teacher prior to admission to the ABC Program.
